AS 13611:2019 PDF

Adopts with national modifications ISO13611:2014 to provide guidance on community interpreting involving spoken or signed language. Community interpreting enables people who do not have a common preferred language to communicate with each other. It is provided for people with limited proficiency in English who need to communicate with others, as well as for people with proficiency in English who need to communicate with people with limited proficiency in English.

This Standard was prepared by the Standards Australia Committee CS-117, Translating, Interpreting and Related Technology.

The objective of this Standard is to provide guidance and recommendations for community interpreters and consumers of community interpreting services. Community interpreting encompasses interpreting in a spoken or signed language. It enables people who do not have a common preferred language to communicate with each other. Community interpreting occurs in a wide variety of public and private settings and facilitates equal access to, and the equal provision of, community and/or public services.

This Standard is an adoption with national modifications and has been reproduced from ISO 13611:2014, Interpreting—Guidelines for community interpreting, and has been varied as indicated to take account of Australian conditions. The modifications relate to the need to include additional features to reflect community interpreting practices in Australia. The profession of community interpreting has existed in Australia for over 40 years, having become established in the 1970s. The conventions of practice that have developed over this time are therefore reflected in these national modifications.
